5 Foods you Must Try When Visiting Belize

Dining-2

When visiting St. George's Caye - Belize, one thing is for certain- you will never go hungry!

First thing in the morning, at the Sand Bar Lounge, you will find a sweet assortment of granola, fruit and yogurt. That is just an appetizer. Breakfast, made to order, typically consists of bread, flour tortillas, or a Belizean specialty, fry jacks that are often served with cheese, refried beans, eggs, etc… Midday meals may include soup, rice and beans, stew chicken, and tamales, while dinner typically consists of a meat, rice and beans, and salad or coleslaw. Serve up lunch and dinner with an ice cold Belikin Beer or tropical mixed drink and you have the makings for satisfaction!

Belize is a melting pot when it comes to cuisine, and with so many delicious dishes to choose from your taste buds will be on cloud nine. Read on to learn about the five foods we think everyone should try when visiting Belize.

Fry Jack

Fry jacks are one of the most popular foods in Belize. They are small triangles of dough that are fried until golden brown and served warm. Normally eaten for breakfast and served alongside refried beans, sausage, eggs, etc.. A drizzle of honey on top turns a savory fry jack into a decadent delight!

Rice and Beans

Rice and beans is the Belizean national dish composed of a base of red kidney beans and rice and cooked in coconut milk. Typically served with stewed chicken, but any meat will do! It is traditionally served with a Belizean style potato salad.

Stew Chicken or Pork

Belizean comfort food at its finest! Chicken or pork is rubbed in Red recado or achiote paste and slow-cooked in broth. Served over rice and beans for lunch or dinner. This dish will leave you feeling full and happy! Click here for a recipe!

Tamales (Bollo)

Belizeans put their own twist on the traditional Mexican tamale by wrapping them with plantain leaves instead of corn husks. Seasoned meat (chicken or pork) is wrapped in a soft corn dough and then steamed in plantain leaves. They can also be vegetarian by substituting the meat with vegetables.

Conch Fritters

Fresh sea food is abundant in Belize, and a crowd favorite is conch. Conch fritters are a popular appetizer, and are made from a batter of Conch, sweet peppers, onions, celery, flour, and seasonings and then deep fried to perfection! Yum!

Whether breakfast, lunch or dinner is your favorite, you will be sure to find a new and robust palate of flavors to excite the senses. We welcome you to our table. Be our guest!

St. George's Caye Resort is located 7 miles by boat transfer from the Belize City marina. We look forward to seeing you in the sun!

#EarthDay at St. George's Caye

Sun-in-Paradise-Beach-and-chairs The beauty of this earth is truly something to preserve.

In an era of heightened awareness for sustainability and care for the earth, Earth Day means many things to many people. Here, in Belize, the celebration of Earth Day is a reminder of how fragile our planet is, but also how taking care of our immediate space will greatly impact the rest of the world.

The things that can positively or negatively affect our ecosystems are truly simple everyday choices. Sure, we may not be able to revolutionize entire cities with energy solutions, but small choices like opting out of single-use plastics (we are working to eliminate these at the resort), turning lights and A/C off when you don't need it and trying to source your food locally, you can make a local impact on a global cause. Read more below on 10-Tips for Eco-friendly habits!

  • 1. Turn it off – Our parents always told us, "Turn off the TV!" or "Turn off the lights when you leave the room!" It usually was to save them on their energy bill. Now it is even more important. Some additional places to remember this practice is when leaving office spaces and hotel rooms.
  • 2. Switch to renewables – You can determine the supply of renewables such as renewable energy by demanding it of your local utility company. Kassie Rohrbach is deputy director of "Ready for 100," a Sierra Club campaign helping mobilize people to demand community-wide clean energy, is cited in a recent article, "Citizens demand for their own homes and towns can help build a clean energy economy on a much larger scale."

4. Don't waste food or compost when you can – Organic matter turns into dirt that can either then be used for fill or also used as a wonderfully nutrient-rich base for planting.

5. Recycle everything – However if you can opt for compostable, use those instead as recycling is not always a safe fall back. We used to think that recycling would solve the world's trash problem. Only making selective choices on what to buy in containers will accomplish that.

6. Drive Less - If you can make the journey by foot, bike or public transport, then do it. Driving, unless you're in an electric vehicle, isn't very eco-friendly and can really add to your carbon footprint. When you do have to drive, make sure that you get the most out of your vehicle by keeping the speed down, ensuring tires are properly inflated and that the engine is running smoothly.

7. Try to cut out plastic – This may sound redundant but it is worth the double mention. Cutting out plastics will not only clean up our land and shorelines, it will reduce the amount of energy used to create the plastic and also to recycle it if it gets to that point. Multiple use containers and just shopping in bulk without needing a container (I.e. for produce) is a great way to reduce the impact you have with the trash you create

8. Use eco-friendly cleaning products – Remember CFCs? They have since been banned, but there are thousands of other toxic chemicals used in cleaning agents. Try to opt for biodegradable and plant-based cleaners on your next shopping trip.

9. Try reducing your consumption of meat and non-native fish. - Even if it's just for two or three days a week - reducing your demand on non local meats can have quite a significant impact on reducing your carbon footprint.

9. Buy local – gogreen.com has many reasons why buying local is a good eco-friendly idea. To name one, buying local reduces your food miles: By shopping locally, you are purchasing goods produced in your local community. Conversely, when you shop at the grocery store, many of the food items you buy travel over 1500 miles to reach your plate. By cutting down on these miles, you are reducing the environmental impact of your food. Local food doesn't create large carbon footprints through overseas plane travel or long truck trips. This cuts down on fuel consumption and air pollution. There isn't a need for shipping facilities, packing facilities or refrigeration.

10. Grow your own - Growing your own veg isn't just a good way to save money, it's also a great way to cut down your carbon footprint and be eco-friendly. Don't have any outside space? Windowsill boxes are a great way to brighten up your view, filter the air coming into your home and offer plenty of space for herbs and small vegetable patches.

Together we can be the change we wish to see in the world and help to preserve this incredible planet!

Find yourself... In the middle of nowhere...

Find yourself... in the middle of nowhere... Find yourself... in the middle of nowhere...

Our need to slow down and become more present in our day-to-day lives is more necessary than ever. This is why wellness travel is one of the fastest growing areas in the tourism industry.

Getting away can be essential to recharge and re-establish balance. While a simple vacation is a great way to relax, a study published in a 2016 article for Transitional Psychiatry found that people who participated in a six-day meditation retreat had fewer bouts of depression and stress-related symptoms. More specifically, yoga retreats are known to improve sleep, quality of life, cardiovascular fitness, anxiety, chronic pain relief, and strengthen the nervous system

Read on to learn about the benefits of wellness travel.

Nature allows you to unwind. Imagine basking in the warm sun, breathing in the clean air, and listening to the quiet breezes. You instantly enrich and reset the senses. Taking the time to be present in nature has shown to reduce the production of cortisol, which is our primary stress hormone.

Disconnect from technology: Unplugging may improve quality of sleep as well as your mood! putting down devices and outside distractors allows you to be fully present. Not many people know this (except our previous guests of course) so it is worth mentioning that one of the unique things about St. George's is that you can truly unplug during your stay. Wi-fi is available in the lounge area so you can check in with loved ones, but the rest of the resort is completely unplugged from the internet and TV. Guests love this quality!

Decompress and release stress: Taking a break from the daily hustle and bustle of life is essential for your mind to recharge. A 2013 study noted that more than 80% of Americans who were surveyed noticed significant drops in stress just after a day or two of traveling.

Spending time with like-minded people: Being surrounded by like-minded people who have similar goals and interests can provide you with encouragement and motivation.

Taking time for yourself: Wellness travel takes you out of your usual routine and mindset and really lets you focus on YOU. Give yourself the freedom to relax, unwind, and recharge. It may inspire you to take time out for yourself far more often than you already do!

Sounds good to us! Even on island time, we all individually take time to pause and take in this pristine land and seascape around us. We hope you join us to do the same!

Be Good to Yourself 2019

Take the time this year to get away and balance Take the time this year to get away and balance

Most people know that the top New Year's resolutions made are for better health and balance of responsibilities with time to enjoy the important things.

When thinking of health, many will run out and join the gym or pick up the latest Pilates video series with hopes of refining their body. What are other things that effect this overall goal? For many, living a fast paced life means there is little time to pause and enjoy the world around them. This is shown to drastically effect health adversely.

At St. George's Caye Resort and surrounding destinations we see travelers for many reasons. Guests may be celebrating the beginning or rekindling of romance, bucket-list diving, seeking adventure, or just to escape from it all.

Most importantly we see people begin their trip still wanting and needing to feel connected with their phones. Slowly but surely that "connection" become less and less important as they reconnect with life, environment and relationships. NBC News featured an article on 5 Scientifically Proven Health Benefits to Travel

With all of these compelling reason to travel and admittedly, a pretty sizable planet, how do you narrow where you are going this year?

If you thrive in an urban environment, you may want to travel to New York City or London. If you are meant to brave the wilderness, working to survive the elements, possibly Tanzania or Nepal suit your travel fancy. Conversely, if you wish to relax and be pampered while completely unplugging and enjoying adventures of a lifetime, Belize may be just the ticket.

Cheers and see you in the sun in 2019!

Meet Leonel!

Meet Leonel!

Everything has its beauty, but not everyone sees it.”

                                                Andy Warhol

Leonel is like a breath of fresh air. He embodies the Belizean spirit. His smile is contagious and you can't help but want to take him home with you. Because Leonel  sees the beauty. He sees the beauty in people. And he sees the beauty in art. St George's Caye isn't complete without Leo's beautiful outlook.

When you arrive to St. George's Caye Resort Leo is one of the first team members you'll meet. You will mostly find him mixing your favorite cocktails and making sure your beer is ice cold. But Leo also loves to entertain. He's full of fun card tricks and bar games that will leave you scratching you're head. But don't ask him how he does it - because he won't tell. Sworn to secrecy by a fellow magician Leo takes his oath seriously and won't share the tricks of the trade.

Leonel knows how we do just about everything here at St. George's Caye. And can help you find you way around, grab you a fresh coconut drink or help you book your tours and diving.

But when Leo is not using his talents to create amazing vacations for our guests - he uses his time to make art. Beautiful art. Check out some of his latest paintings. They go fast so hurry on down to Belize to grab a unique piece of art. Aren't these amazing!?

Before painting, Leo was an artist designing and creating tattoos and t-shirts for special occasions. He was recently in Belize City at the annual tattoo expo sharing his love for art with others.

Like many of our team members Leonel was born and raised in Valley of Peace, Cayo District in Belize. His father is a farmer like many Valley residents - as the area is ripe for healthy crops and cattle - and his mother is a chef at a local restaurant. Leo has a brother David, who is a team member in the kitchen and younger sister who is continuing her education.

Come see the beauty Leonel sees everyday at St George's Caye Resort. His beautiful spirit is essential to a care-free vacation in Belize.

Check out our latest special here! Cheers!
