Jumping into the beautiful teal blue Caribbean Sea with a life jacket was the first of many steps taken while choosing to re-emerge from the last year. I knew long before that moment that I had slipped into default survival mode but could not tell how far. It was apparent there would be an unpacking of coping skills that may have become habits based on fear. Although the trip was previously scheduled for March 2020, I intentionally kept my bags packed in plain sight as a reminder to someday TAKE THE TRIP. Since then, I have been cautiously peeking my head out from behind a metaphorical curtain to see when it was safe for travel. For the last 12 months, the world has navigated unprecedented circumstances and re-adjusted time and time again with hope, fear, loss, best effort, exhaustion, highs, lows, and everything in between. Back to the life jacket moment....

Gloriously smiling with wind tousled hair and skin covered in briny crystals of the Caribbean Sea, I was mesmerized by the "turquoise highway" and the never-ending horizon. My eyes stretched to soak in the natural beauty as the boat stopped at our snorkeling spot just beyond an opening in the reef. And then, it started to happen. Like a ping pong ball bouncing between opposing thoughts of "what if" and "seriously, it is saltwater, you float", I was feeling my brain go through the back-and-forth contemplation of risk vs. benefit and a long list of potential scenarios. My body tensed up and my mind went into overdrive. I was nervous to get in the water. I had never thought twice about jumping into the ocean before that day so what was the big deal about throwing a life jacket on when jumping into the beautiful waters of Belize? Nothing....

But it was a clear indicator of the shift that had occurred since the last time I was in the ocean. My fear center was the main attraction on stage right now and I knew it. I was working from a place of heightened caution. Until then, I had not realized how much caution had taken over my interactions with life. At that moment, it was fascinating to witness my fear response play out in an otherwise totally exciting and enjoyable experience.

Choosing to enjoy myself and get in the water, I chose the middle road, grabbed a hold of the life jacket, and jumped in. The looks of accepting another embarrassing "Mom moment" covered the faces of my two boys patiently waiting in the ocean. It took three breaths with my face underwater to relax into the magical world of the Belize Barrier Reef. Like an old friend, the spark of playful curiosity quickly dissolved any fear as my attention shifted to the subtle outline in the sand of an enormous manta ray about 30 feet below.

Moments later, I realized the life jacket was now in my way and I did not need it anymore. Along with all my tension and stress, the life jacket trailed behind in the wake of my flippers. The warm Caribbean waters started to wash away the heaviness, worry, fear and grief I had been holding onto for way too long. When I emerged to the surface, I realized how wonderful it felt to be here again. Not only was it fantastic to be here at St. George's Caye in Belize, but it was also amazing to feel once again inspired, hopeful, and alive.

Now more than ever, taking the time to heal and recover is imperative to the health and well-being of humanity. I am so glad I grabbed the life jacket and jumped in! It is one of many steps taken to shift out of the survival mode and onto the road of re-emerging into life. Grab your life jacket and let's go!

Paddleboarding the Blue Waters of Belize

paddleboard-belize-cover

When we were packing for our trip to St. George's Caye Resort a thought occurred to me: I should bring my paddleboard. It is an inflatable SUP so it wouldn't be that difficult to pack my clothes around the gear and get on the plane. My very sensible wife convinced me that the resort had boards available and that I would be able to get on the water at anytime. She also reminded that we were headed to the private, quite reserve of St. George's Caye to relax! So off we went sans board. I was cautiously optimistic that boards would be at the ready.

As we flew over the continent and we reached the east coast, the bright blue Belizean waters revealed themselves. I have see the water in Mexico, I have seen the water in Hawaii and I have seen the water in Bali but I have never seen water this colour before. It is vibrant. A real treat for my travelling eyes. As I peered out that airplane window all I could think about was, "When do I get to paddle?!". One of our hosts explained to us that there is a shelf along most of the Caribbean coast line. It is wide and an average of about 5' to 12' deep. Sounds perfect!

We were escorted from the airport to a boat waiting for us at a nearby dock. Getting to St. George's Caye Resort is a short boat shuttle from Belize City. It is only 7 miles making the trip quick. Arriving at the island we were greeted with smiling faces, a colourful refreshment and...there they were, all tucked away in a seaside rack – the paddleboards! My smile was ear to ear and my wife gave me that 'I am happy for you' and 'see, I told you there was nothing to worry about' look!

That evening it was all I could do not to jump on a board and go explore but we were being treated to the weekly Saturday evening beach bonfire and dinner. Wow, what a way to start an island vacation. We got to know some of the staff, introduced ourselves to the other guests and got acquainted with our new home for the next week. John, my business partner and fellow paddle addict, and I discussed our game plan for the next morning. We had some exploring to do.

The next morning after fresh coffee and a hearty island breakfast, we were ready. We checked out the selection of boards, sized up paddles and off we went. St. George's Caye is a small island. I think has a circumference of about 2.5kms (about a mile). There is a windward side and a leeward side. We chose to start on the leeward side. It is more sheltered and adorned with mangroves. The water is very peaceful and never very deep.

One of the first things we discovered was a manatee habitat. Who knew?! Right off the docks of the resort live a family of sea cows. We were hopeful to see one but know that sea life can be elusive. Not for us it seems! We saw a little splash from our standing view point so we went to investigate. Paddleboards are the perfect vessel for experiencing sea life. They are quite and your view point is much higher that a kayak or boat. As we got closer to the manatee we notice there were two – an infant and an adult. How cool! They saw us, swam right under the board and then swam away to mind their own business. We carried on through the mangroves back to the resort to report on our sightings.

That evening we were given a show by the Belize sky. Our first vibrant sunset was about to happen. The first thought in our minds – let's go get boards! Our we went towards the every changing array of colours as the sun sank down below the horizon. The waters calmed right down and we enjoyed the peace and serenity that the glowing hour bestowed upon us. It was at this moment we were falling in love with this little slice of paradise.

After seeing our love for being on the water, other guests and staff encouraged us to take advantage of a sailboat ride out to the sandbar. Oliver rigged up the sails and took us on the short journey just off the end of the Caye. It was spectacular. We played and snorkelled in three to five feet of warm, clear water. Our senses over flowed. As we sailed back John and I both knew we were paddling back out the next day. Everyone thought we were crazy. That is was too far. Being from Canada and paddling in the North Pacific made us feel comfortable with the distance. We decided to approach the sandbar from the leeward side of the island. We thought we would avoid any wind or major currents that way. Once off the tip of the island we realized just how close we were and it had only been about 20 minutes of paddling. We were about to head straight out to the sandbar and meet the sailboat when all of the sudden John spotted something...

A single splash off the bows of our boards turned out to be a few splashes. One, two and then three dolphins popped up and started to get curious about us. I was elated. Seeing a dolphin in the wild was definitely a bucket list activity. My wife absolutely loves dolphins and although I knew she would be overjoyed that we saw some, she would want to come explore as well.

All of the sudden two more dolphins joined us. We paddled with this pod of five amazing and curious creatures for close to an hour. They would feed, play, swim and come by us once in a while to check us out. We paddle gently and took photos until our camera ran out of batteries! John and I saw some friends anchor the sailboat and we decided we would try to paddle corral the dolphins over to them. Like we thought we were some sort or paddle dolphin ranchers! Just when we though the dolphins were going along with our plan, they took a turn and went off in the other direction. But wow, what an incredible experience. Paddleboarding with dolphins.

The buzz about paddleboarding was growing around the guests at the resort. Many guests who had never tried it before saw what we were experiencing wanted in. It was really cool to see people new to the sport give it a try and get the same feelings we were getting. That brought us a lot of joy to share this lifestyle we enjoy so much with new friends.

That evening the sunset show was back on and the ladies joined us. The colours were slightly different but just as magical. We were out there until dark and loved being on the water with our loves. It is calm, connected and creates a different sort of bond when you do things like this together. We still reflect back on our time paddling together in the warm Belize sun. Watching for rays and dolphins and just talking about life. It is moment in our lives we will always look back on and cherish. What made it even better was sharing the time with two very special friends.

On about day four of our stay at St. George's Caye Resort we gained a reputation and the crazy Canadian paddleboarders. We took on the moniker with pride and lived up to the expectations. John and I were determined to discover more sea life, paddle around the island and go back to the sandbar again. In our travels we saw countless stingrays, manta rays, manatees, barracuda, tarpon, a nurse shark and even a crocodile! Now don't freak out, the croc was quite a ways from the resort and he took of like a shot as soon as he saw us (hence no picture...you'll just have to take my word for it!). I can tell you, experiencing St. George's Caye by paddleboard was incredible and life altering. I recommend it to anyone to try. You don't have to have any paddle experience whatsoever. You can even kneel on the board to get started. Just do it and go experience your island vacation from a different perspective. You'll never know what you'll discover unless you leave the shore!

Top 10 Reasons to Travel to Belize in 2021 - St. George's Caye

Kayaking-With-Dolphins---St.-Georges-Caye-Resort-Beliz_20210309-194651_1

We've always been in love with our location and proximity to travelers. We are blessed with an incredible ecosystem and views to take your breath away. Here are a few more reasons to come away to the island in 2021 (or beyond). Please let us know if you have questions about travel at this time, and let us customize your stay and getaway!

1. Close and Convenient – Belize is a destination that is relatively close to home. With many airport hubs offering direct flights, we could be just hours from your front door. To add to that, we are so fortunate to be nestled near crushed coral beaches, tropical jungles, and the teal blue waters of the Caribbean Sea. St. George's Caye is the closest caye (island) to the mainland and only a 25-minute boat ride from the marina. This proximity gives you the chance to eliminate almost a WHOLE DAY of travel while coming and going. Plus, our transfers are complimentary, so you save big money too!

2.  Naturally socially distanced - Discover a new lodging experience by choosing our secluded island paradise, over possibly the more crowded San Pedro. Our island's resort promises incomparable privacy and intimacy. We also have a naturally spacious environment to allow for you and your travel mate or mates to enjoy paradise without a care!

3. Indulge in different cuisine every night - Try world-class vegetarian fare, fancy seafood, savory rice, beans, and stew. You can't leave without trying fry jacks by the way…

4.  We take you there - When you come as a guest of other locations in Belize, you are on your own to navigate, of course, you can do that while at St. George's too, but our specialty is knowing where to take you for the most incredible, authentic Belizean experience. You will be safe, sound, and sure to experience the best of Belize!

5  No language lessons needed -Most Belize citizens are tri-lingual, with English being the most often-spoken. There is a unique dialect here so you will want to listen closely, but it is the most fantastic attribute to know that when you come to our little country, we speak your language!

6.  Getting around is a breeze -With tours leaving the island every day, we make sure you have the chance to see the sights, taste the tropics and take in the culture. If staying put is your preference, we do consider relaxation an "Island Approved Activity."

7.  Take a holiday from crowds - As a secluded island, we are the only public business on the island. The rest of the island is populated by vacation homes that are sparsely placed on acres of land. You will feel like you have your own private island. Who can say "bucket list checked"!?

8.  Belize is easy to get to from Canada and the USA - Who knows if the year ahead will attract more carriers given Belize's growing reputation, and our stringent standards? There are direct flights from many hubs and airline tickets are at an all time low.

9.  Leave your calculator home - The U.S.-to-Belize dollar conversion rate is $1 USD to $2 BZD, but since most businesses take U.S. currency, you might not have to remember it!

10.  Expect to smile a lot - If the world ranked nations by the number of friendly smiles, spontaneous greetings and offers of help, there's no question that Belize would be at the top of the list in 2021 and beyond. Our friendly staff is there to meet and even exceed your every expectation. Be prepared to be WOWED!

BONUS - Saturday night BBQ – This is a time to be social, or just sit back in your Adirondack chair and watch the flames dance with the moonlight on the sea in the background. This is one of our favorite times to connect with our gusts, and we have heard repeatedly that this is one of our guests' favorite memories! Island time always includes rest and relaxation, and reconnection.

Our Guests Say it Best | Reviews of Paradise

Sailing-the-Sea---St.-Georges-Caye-Resort---Belize

Belize is a country of natural abundance and vibrant colors. With incredible views, unlimited adventures, and the ultimate in relaxation, we feel so fortunate to be blessed with this little slice of paradise. Guests rave about these qualities, but more so, they feel connected through our island family team. The people serving you at St. George's Caye Resort, are unmatched in their readiness to make your stay the most rewarding, relaxing, and rejuvenating possible. Don't take our word for it... Our guests really do say it best. Check out some of these reviews and be immersed into the culture, color, and connection of the magic of the island!

Private Island Experience ☀☀☀☀☀

This is exactly the type of resort we needed for a relaxing few days at the end of our tour around Belize.

A place to disconnect and relax while having some amazing adventures. We got connected with Tim and Andrea before our stay and even before our trip started we had a really great impression on how it would go.

We were picked up in Belize City by Wilbur by boat and delivered out to this private island to be excited by our overwater cabanas that were the first things we saw. Wilbur then took our bags directly to our room for us without a thought. Later in the trip, he took us back and forth to Belize City again and his service was always on point.

Jahnene the manager greeted us at the island and gave us the tour around. We loved this property how it spanned from one ocean side of the island to the other. You could always find a perfect spot no matter the wind direction. We later found out that Jahnene was actually perfect at her job. She spent hours on the phone for us with different clinics organizing our Covid tests for our return to Canada. We are so grateful to have her there to relieve that stress for us. That aside, Jahnene came up to chat with us at every meal just to find out how she could make our stay better. She made it her mission to understand exactly what we needed to have the best time ever here. Thank you Jahnene!

Adventure was the name of the game here and to name a few, we did three dives here and saw an abundance of healthy corals and creatures. Jose helped my girlfriend finish her open-water certification course, which she was actually very nervous about, but Jose was extremely patient and made her feel super relaxed about the whole process. Freddy was the same and always made sure he kept an eye on her. That was really all she needed to feel secure. It helped that we saw a beautiful turtle and a little nurse shark as they were super peaceful.

Kayaks and paddleboards are free to use anytime and we took advantage of that as the back bay was so calm and beautiful. We say eagle rays and stingrays swimming under us and on our last day, I even got to kayak with dolphins. Apparently, this is a common thing, but a first for me. Three dolphins swam around me for over an hour very curious of what I was up to. All of this happened while enjoying an incredible sunset.

Andy helped teach us how to use the Hobie Cat, which is a mini sailboat fit for 3 or 4 people, also free to use any time and once you get a quick lesson from Andy, you are good to journey around on your own if you want. He's a great teacher!

Edison and Alex run the bar and deliver amazing plentiful amounts of food. We were well taken care of and they also played lots of games with us and built us an awesome bonfire twice for us and the other guests. One of the things we liked most about this place, was that the staff really created a communal feeling which made it easy to get to know other guests through fun activities. Nobody was left out unless they wanted to be which really added to our experience there.
Hermit Crab races were especially a great idea haha.

Thank you everyone and to the other awesome guests for making our stay amazing! Thank you to Cornell for driving us around in the city to get everything we needed as well.

Incredible Staff ☀☀☀☀☀

The resort was beautiful, the cabanas were enjoyable, however the staff made the trip ever better. Always pleasant and willing to help without being hovering over you. From Jahnene, Oliver, Edison, Alex, Melvin to Cornell our tour guide, everyone was amazing and we are very appreciative to them for making our stay so wonderful. A notable mention is the Chef - every meal prepared was fantastic!! Extremely tasteful, portion sizes perfect and willing to accommodate any dietary need.

Belizean Paradise ☀☀☀☀☀

We arrived into Belize on Oct. 25, 2020. Our airport transfer driver, Cornell, was super friendly, and showed us the interesting sights on the way to the dock. It was really neat to hear about the history of Belize, the Belizean culture, and historical sights. Once we arrived at the dock, our bags were loaded onto the water taxi and we were on our way to the island. The boat operator was very kind and helpful. Once we arrived at the dock of St, Georges Caye, we were greeted and our bags were taken to our cabana. We went to the office to check in and get our keys. Jeanine (spelling incorrect) was so kind and helpful. She went over our activities that we reserved with us and guided us back to our cabana. We arrived a bit late for lunch, but they did have plates made for us and they were promptly delivered to our room. Delicious! The cabana was beautiful. We had one of the over the water cabanas. Perfect for viewing the amazing Belizean sunsets. I can't say enough about the staff that worked during our visit. Edison was so kind and fun to be around. Oliver, was helpful, funny and also very kind and fun to hang around a chat with. The Scuba guides, Freddie and Jose were amazing. Very vigilant on keeping an eye on a first time diver. The fishing guide, Bones, was very good at knowing the exact place to go catch the best fish. What an amazing haul of fish they caught, If you plan to go fishing, please ask for Bones. He will not disappoint you. The chef cooked impeccable meals. I had things I had never tasted before. Everything was delicious. Alex was a wonderful server and attended to every request. The massage therapist is amazing and you will be so relaxed when you are done, the stress just melts away, Everyone that worked during out stay, Oct 25-30, 2020, was amazing! I will definitely be back. I feel like I made friends with the staff and look forward to seeing them again. Would love to meet Tim the owner. He went above and beyond to help make our dream vacation a reality. Thank you to everyone that helped make our stay unforgettable! Y'all are amazing! I can't wait to see you again! If you are considering a vacation, please check out St. George's Caye Resort. It will not disappoint you! I felt very pampered and well taken care of. Thank you to everyone! See you again, soon! Chris and Jaimee

St. George's Caye Scuba Diving - A Guest's Perspective

St.-Georges-Caye-Resort-from-the-sky Thank you so much OFTB Travel for this incredible blog and pics

We had snorkeled in Belize before and discovered a very small amount of their immense barrier reef, but this time we were ready to go down into the depths to see more of the beautiful creatures and healthy corals.

If you could see all that life thriving at the surface level, imagine what we might find this time with Scuba Diving.

Last year, in Panama I was able to get certified as an open-water diver and on this trip, it was my girlfriend, Mala's turn as she still had some skills to complete.

We headed out for our first dive at St. George's Caye, a small island positioned right in between Belize City and a very undisturbed part of the reef. This same reef spans from the area where Belize meets Mexico all the way down to Roatan in Honduras. For me, just saying "the reef" doesn't do it justice without the explanation of its greatness. In Belize, they say that it is considered the second largest barrier reef in the world, but as the Great Barrier Reef has been affected so much by global change, nearly half of it is dead or bleached. This means that Belize's barrier reef is actually the largest living barrier reef in the world.

A 15-minute boat ride from St. George's Caye and we were ready to explore this underwater world.

Jose had given Mala some very clear direction to make sure she felt comfortable with all her gear and we jumped in to immediately be comforted by the abundance of life, teeming all around us. Any nerves or worries that we had in mind before were swept away as all of our attention was taken by the sheer awe of the endless reef.

We began swimming and checking off Mala's needed skills. Along the way seeing more colours than we ever did snorkeling. Jose noticed how calm the ocean made us. It had been calling us from cold Canada for a long time and finally, we were fully immersed.

Beauty at every sight and the peaceful silence of blowing bubbles up to the surface. As we swam along slowly with the soft current, we saw many interesting creatures.

The reef had many cavernous areas and structured creviced pathways for swimming through. In many of these caves and crevices we found lobsters and crabs claiming them as homes.

In one of the large crevices we spotted a school of large jacks that swam in a tornado pattern and didn't seem to be bothered by our presence. Everything there acted as if it had never been introduced to human life and therefore, had no reason to fear it.

This brings us to the turtle. At first, we saw its silhouette floating at a distance, but as it spotted us, it decided to come take a closer look. We sat in one place patiently allowing it to make its move and this curious turtle came right up within an arm's length. It drifted by peacefully checking us out and then continued on its way. We couldn't believe that this turtle would be so considerate as to allow us to get such great pictures of him.

At around the half way point, we found a sleepy nurse shark laying motionless between two large rocks. As it spotted us, it decided that we were bigger so it swam out in a beautiful display of its reign over the reef.

Mala completed the rest of her required skills and felt confident as a newly appointed open-water diver.

On the way back to the boat, we took in as much of the colourful life as we could, but later decided that one dive was just not enough. We decided to do two more dives from St. George's Caye and everytime, it felt like a new world.

There is something so free about breathing underwater and discovering a completely new habitat that is indescribable until you experience it for yourself.

Never pass on the opportunity to dive, if you come across one. Any nerves will be swallowed by the sea once you get in. At St. George's Caye, you can't go wrong when in comes to diving. Everything from the staff and equipment, to the beautiful coral reef is world class.

This new underwater world is just waiting to be explored.

Happy swimming!

Top 10 Reasons to Travel To Belize in 2021

Overwater-Cabana---St.-Georges-Caye-Resort-Belize
As if anyone really needs a reason to travel to sunny Belize... But if you are on the edge of choosing our quaint and sunny little country, these TOP TENS may just help to break the tie!

1. Need we point out the proximity to the Caribbean Sea? St. George's Caye is only 7 miles, over clear waters, from the mainland, so we literally offer 360° views of the incredible, teal-blue Caribbean Sea. This gives you the chance to eliminate almost a WHOLE DAY of travel while coming and going. Plus, our transfers are complimentary, so you save big money too!

2. We take you there! When you come as a guest of other locations in Belize, you are on your own to navigate, of course, you can do that while at St. George's too, but our specialty is knowing where to take you for the most incredible, authentic Belizean experience. You will be safe, certain, and sure to experience the best of Belize!

3. No language lessons needed. Most Belize citizens are tri-lingual, with English being the most often-spoken. There is a unique dialect here so you will want to listen closely, but it is the most fantastic attribute to know that when you come to our little country, we speak your language!

4. Getting around is a breeze. With tours leaving the island every day, we make sure you have the chance to see the sights, taste the tropics and take in the culture. If staying put is your preference, we do consider relaxation an "Island Approved Activity"

5. Take a holiday from crowds. As a secluded island, we are the only public business on the island. The rest of the island is populated by vacation homes that are sparsely placed on acres of property. You will feel like you have your own private island. Who can say "bucket list checked!"?

6. Belize is safe and easy to get to from many hubs. With our close attention to cleanliness and care for our guests, we ensure your most pleasant travel possible. There are direct flights from many hubs and some airline tickets are at an all-time low.

7. Leave your calculator home. The U.S.-to-Belize dollar conversion rate is $1 USD to $2 BZD, but since most businesses take U.S. currency, you might not have to remember it!

8. Your "to do" list could get longer in 2021. Archaeologists are always undertaking new Mayan excavation sites and if you have not visited all of Belize's seven World Heritage sites, make a decision to complete the list.

9. Expect to smile a lot. If the world ranked nations by the number of friendly smiles, spontaneous greetings and offers of help, there's no question that Belize would be at the top of the list in 2021 and beyond. Our friendly staff is there to meet and even exceed your every expectation. Be prepared to be WOWED!

10. Nobody will judge you! Do exactly as you please here without making apologies or excuses to anyone (unless you are not traveling alone!). Set a new hammock time record… Eat a as much of a dish that you love and don't think twice – then even eat desert! This is your time to indulge!

7 Reasons Destination Weddings are the Best

destination-wedding-beach-belize-islandjpg

You're engaged! Congratulations! After popping the question, there are so many exciting decisions to make in the wedding planning process! One of the very first (and important!) decisions to make is to choose whether your wedding will be held locally or at a destination of your choosing. These days, it is getting more and more complicated to host your wedding at local venues, and the average bride or groom has rescheduled their meeting up to four times in the last 12 months. That is not only extremely expensive, but it also has to be very annoying. St. George's Caye Resort offers the opportunity to get away from it all and still be naturally distanced with your loved ones. We are taking more and more wedding and group bookings these days as people are looking for a way to be together.

Belize offers a way for your guests to couple their support for you with a trip to last a lifetime and a celebration your guests will always remember!

So what's so great about destination weddings? We're so glad you asked! Read on for seven reasons why we think they are the best!

1. Does it get any better than extending the celebration over a few days? On average, guests will stay 3 or more days at the wedding location. Couples will have plenty of opportunities to celebrate with their guests over multiple days and can host pre and post-wedding activities such as dinners together, lounging by the pool, spa treatments, and excursions such as fishing or zip lining!

2. The guest list for destination weddings tends to be smaller and more intimate, with an average guest count of 38. Your guests will be your closest family and friends, and you'll get quality time with each one of them- especially when everyone is staying at the same resort.

3. When you plan a destination wedding, you can leave the details to the on-site experts. Most resorts will have a planner assigned to arrange all of the needed paperwork, officiant, and other important details of your day. This makes planning a breeze!

4. Travel to a new place! Is an overwater bungalow on your bucket list? Have you always wanted to dip your toes in the ocean? Experience the culture of another country or an area of your own country? You can literally choose any destination your heart desires, and spend as much time as you'd like exploring before and after your celebration!

5. Stay for your honeymoon! A destination wedding basically doubles as a wedding and a vacation. Once your guests have gone home, it's easy to continue your honeymoon at the same location! Bonus- you could split your time and jet off to another location and experience two different honeymoon locations!

6. Your photos will be incredible! One of the reasons couples choose a destination wedding is for a gorgeous location. Whether that's a tropical beach or in the middle of the mountains, you're pretty much guaranteed an amazing backdrop for your wedding!

7. Save money with a destination wedding. According to The Knot, the national average cost of a wedding in 2018 was $33,931. All weddings are unique, so costs can vary greatly from person to person, but smaller, more intimate destination weddings tend to cost less than a traditional celebration.

Weddings at St. George's Caye Resort

We have the perfect backdrop for your celebration right here at St. George's Caye Resort! Our little slice of paradise is abundant with incredible ceremony settings from the beach to our gardens!

Our experienced coordinator makes planning easy and will arrange all of the needed paperwork and an officiant, as well as help you obtain your Belize marriage license and select local vendors for your big day.

We also offer an online gift registry- choose the resort and Belize experiences you'd like to receive as gifts from family and friends!

For more details about bringing your group away to the island, contact our friendly reservation specialist at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or 1-800-813-8498 and they will help you plan the perfect island event!

Invent Your Adventure - Relax with Island Time

Kayaking-Adventure---St.-Georges-Caye-Resort-Belize Thank you to Alisa and Cole for joining us on the island and for the beautiful pics featured in this article.

Imagine lounging in a hammock looking out into the Caribbean Sea or experiencing the thrill of the jungle from the canopy on your zipline. Whether you are an adventure seeker, or truly just need to relax, unwind, and be pampered, we've got you covered.

Here on the island, it's all about the experience, and your St. George's Caye Resort is designed by you. We are here to help, of course, but you choose to do as much or as little as you wish.

To help you create memories of a lifetime, we've designed a weekly activities program with our best tours (and best guides!). If relaxation and rest is your goal, we do consider that an island approved, "activity".

Just to get started, here are 4+ incredible ways to spend a day at St. George's Caye!

  • Does the thought of sinking into warm, teal blue waters sound inviting? Try diving or snorkeling. Our divemasters know of unnamed dive sites, making your trip to the reef personable and without the crowds, you may experience at other named dive sites. They also know where to find the best chance to see dolphins, manatees, and all of the other vibrant creatures of the sea! Not sure about SCUBA? Get your feet wet with our complimentary Try Scuba Diving. Try SCUBA enables you to experience breathing underwater using SCUBA equipment under the direct supervision of our instructor in a safe and controlled environment. Included is a brief gear orientation followed by instruction in the pool, at no charge!
  • Want to be active while exploring the island? Enjoy our complimentary water activities: kayaks, Hobie Cat sailboats (instruction is provided by our team), SUP's, snorkeling off the dock, and our saline swimming pool. There is plenty of space and a natural environment with endless views.
  • If adventure and experience are what is bringing you to Belize, we have packed a ton of options in for that checklist. Our host will meet with you and let you know about excursions for the week. Just some of the experiences are:
      • Cave Tubing and Zip Lining - This is a chart-topper and one of the most popular adventures that we offer guests.
      • Lamanai Mayan Temple and Ruins - Turn back time and check out these ancient ruins. The views from the top are also spectacular and insta-worthy! The name "Lamanai" comes from the word "submerged crocodile" in the Mayan language. This site, situated along the New River Lagoon, features the monumental architecture of temples and palaces dating from the Classic and Pre-Classic Periods. Pollen evidence dates the earliest occupation at the site to be about 1500 B.C. The earliest pottery has been dated to about 500 B.C.
      • San Pedro Slam (snorkeling and a visit to Ambergris Caye) - Travel by boat across the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea, going past nearby Caye Chapel and Caye Caulker, to San Pedro on Ambergris Caye. Spend the morning on a guided snorkeling and/or diving adventure at two popular sites, Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley. (For guests who do not want to snorkel or dive, you have the full day to explore Ambergris Caye.) At the end of your day, you return to St. George's with plenty of time to unwind and freshen up before dinner.
      • Blue Hole National Park/St. Herman's Cave - The park is a source of wonder with numerous underground streams, and extensive cave system, and is ideal for birding with over 200 species of birds. Three of the five species of wild cats found in Belize - jaguar, ocelot, and jaguarondi - have been sighted in the park. A guided exploration into the cave system takes you through huge caverns that are adorned with crystalline formations. Take a walk down the footpath and staircase of the Maya shaman and priest as they journeyed into the underworld where they used the chambers deep within the cave for their ceremonies. See Maya artifacts such as pottery, beads, obsidian knives, and human skeletons calcified in the limestone floor that date back 2000 years.

When you return from your day-well-spent, we will have a lavishly authentic meal, drinks, and the chance to reflect on your life-long memories. We are here to serve you!

St. George's Caye Resort is located 7 miles by boat transfer from the Belize City marina. We are taking reservations for summer and fall, with our worry-free travel policies. We are filling fast so book soon! We look forward to seeing you in the sun!

Find yourself... In the middle of nowhere...

Find yourself... in the middle of nowhere... Find yourself... in the middle of nowhere...

Our need to slow down and become more present in our day-to-day lives is more necessary than ever. Navigating new ways of living have made it more vital to practice healthy balance.

Getting away can be essential to recharge and re-establish your sense of self. While a simple vacation is a great way to relax, a study published in an article for Transitional Psychiatry found that people who participated in a six-day meditation retreat had fewer bouts of depression and stress-related symptoms. More specifically, yoga retreats are known to improve sleep, quality of life, cardiovascular fitness, anxiety, chronic pain relief, and strengthen the nervous system

With the ability to naturally socially distance, wellness can be practiced with peace of mind.

Read on to learn about the benefits of wellness travel.

Nature allows you to unwind. Imagine basking in the warm sun, breathing in the clean air, and listening to the quiet breezes. You instantly enrich and reset the senses. Taking the time to be present in nature has shown to reduce the production of cortisol, which is our primary stress hormone.

Disconnect from technology: Unplugging may improve quality of sleep as well as your mood! putting down devices and outside distractors allows you to be fully present. Not many people know this (except our previous guests of course) so it is worth mentioning that one of the unique things about St. George's is that you can truly unplug during your stay. Wi-fi is available in the lounge area so you can check in with loved ones, but the rest of the resort is completely unplugged from the internet and TV. Guests love this quality!

Decompress and release stress: Taking a break from the daily hustle and bustle of life is essential for your mind to recharge. A 2013 study noted that more than 80% of Americans who were surveyed noticed significant drops in stress just after a day or two of traveling.

Spending time with like-minded people: Being surrounded by like-minded people who have similar goals and interests can provide you with encouragement and motivation.

Taking time for yourself: Wellness travel takes you out of your usual routine and mindset and really lets you focus on YOU. Give yourself the freedom to relax, unwind, and recharge. It may inspire you to take time out for yourself far more often than you already do!

Sounds good to us! Even on island time, we all individually take time to pause and take in this pristine land and seascape around us. We hope you join us to do the same!

"Un-Belizeable" Summer Vacation - 5 Reasons to Come Away this Summer

Sunset Overwater Cabana Dock See yourself in Belize this summer!

With the New Year underway and 2021 in full swing, it is a great time to plan for the future and give yourself something incredible to look forward to.

Many people enjoy escaping to Belize during the winter months to enjoy the warm sunshine and ocean breezes. It really is no secret that Belize is a fantastic travel destination and more tourists are flocking to this hidden gem every year. But, did you know that summer is also a wonderful time to visit? Temperatures in Belize are comparable or even more mild than many places in the U.S. during the summer months, and ocean breezes and the shade of coconut trees offer much more relief than you are likely to find in your hometown – plus you will have the luxury of no responsibilities while taking it all in. Read on for our top 5 perks to visiting Belize this summer!

  • It's Grand Slam Fishing Season! Fishing here is excellent year-round, but the best times to catch the "Big Three" of tarpon, bonefish, and permit is in June, July, and August. When you catch all three of these fish, it's known as the "Grand Slam", which is how the fishing season got its name! We are fortunate to be located adjacent to the flats, close to the reef, and a short ride from the Belize River, so guests can enjoy a variety of fishing on their Caribbean vacation.
  • While there isn't a specific time of year that is best for scuba diving, many divers prefer the calmer waters of the Belizean summer. The water is pleasantly warm during the summer at 85°F, and the sea breeze tempers the heat a bit during this time.
  • Temperatures in Belize are comparable to many places in the U.S. during the summer months, and ocean breezes and the shade of coconut trees offer relief.
  • While summer does mark the beginning of "rainy season", don't be alarmed! This season applies mostly to the mainland (the rain forest needs its rain to thrive after all!). Rain showers are typically brief and intermittent at the island, allowing you plenty of time to enjoy the sunshine!

During the summer months, Belize has fewer visitors which allows you the opportunity to have more privacy with fewer people while you explore mainland excursions and attractions such as the Maya Ruins.  And you'll find that going through customs & immigration is much faster – the very second gained in paradise is a win!

June marks the start of Belize's lobster season. During this time, you'll find a variety of lobster dishes being served during our farm-to-table, banquet-style dining at the resort.

In addition, Belizeans celebrate in four different parts of the country with Lobsterfest. San Pedro's Lobsterfest is one of the biggest celebrations offering free live music and discounted prices on drinks and lobster. The San Pedro Slam Excursion is a fun way to experience Belizean culture then return for a peaceful rest of your day! Cheers to the best summer yet!

Tell your true, "My fish was this big!" story from Belize!
Sink into the best of both worlds and experience jungle and sea in one trip!
Take your first steps together into paradise!

We are here when you are ready to travel again. The world will once again be connected and we can't wait to #seeyouinthesun! With our "Protect your Plans" easy booking policies, you will rest assured that you can look forward to the future!

Daydreams for Departure - Plan Ahead

10-20190911_071615

We can all likely agree on one thing, with most people often wishing for more time, this is maybe more of an answer to those wishes than we bargained for. 2020 has been quite the year. We are so grateful to have guests finding peace and tranquility on the island.

Here are the Top 5 Tips on planning for your next getaway. Feast your eyes on images of the world and let the endorphins rush as you plan for your in-person appearance at your next destination:

  • Order a travel book – www.amazon.com has an incredible assortment of travel aid books both Fodor's and Lonely Planet publish fabulous books about travel to destinations all over the world. What a way to not only expand your mind and wealth of knowledge culture but this exercise can expand your travel plans to places you didn't even think about prior to checking it out.
  • Actually, take the time to read it – It is easy to be "busy"... Homeschooling, working from home and many other adjustments have us in a bit of a tailspin. It is so important to take time to step away from reality a bit and immerse yourself into something that rejuvenates your spirit. Whether it be yoga, a good fiction novel, or a travel book. Make time!
  • Search destinations online - Destination websites not only have incredible footage of their property, they also have valuable information that will allow you to make comparisons while you have a little downtime. That way, when airfares are still low, and you know you are free to roam again, you can book with confidence knowing you did your homework.
  • Talk about your plans - Now is the time to be brainstorming with your travel buddy or evaluating your choices in your mind. Talk about the types of adventures you wish to enjoy, how much rest and relaxation you need during your time, and what bucket list agenda you wish to check off.
  • Check Airfare and Travel News Often – Once we are free to travel the globe again, your best time to book will be just as the opportunity is opened again and when airfares are competitive. Be prepared so that when the time is right, you can strike out for your next journey around this incredible planet!

We hope that this simple list allows you to take some much-needed mental escape and globe-trot a bit in your mind. Until we meet again, sending you island vibes and well wishes!

Our Guests Say it Best - The Sweetest Honeymoon in Belize

Seaside-at-St.-Georges-Caye-Resort---Beliz_20201116-022510_1

Our guests truly say it best! We are so grateful for all of our guests who come to our secluded island paradise, but this review is so incredible. We love all kinds of love, and are so happy to have hosted this awesome couple for the beginning of their lives together!

Alexandra Porte - November 2020 - Google Reviews 5/5

Exceeded my expectations!!! My husband and I stayed here for our honeymoon in October 2020 and couldn't be happier with this resort. We stayed in a beautiful overwater bungalow and woke up to a tray of tea and freshly squeezed Belizean orange juice every morning that was delivered to our front porch.

We enjoyed watching tropical fish, rays, and small nurse sharks swim around the docks. The resort staff provided outstanding customer service and were so accommodating. The restaurant kept us well fed with an amazing breakfast menu, full lunch, snacks, and four-course dinners every day. The food was delicious, and the cocktails are simply divine. The chef even cooked us up our catch of the day after our fishing trip.

The staff will even climb a palm tree to retrieve a coconut and make you a true island coconut cocktail drink! There are always kayaks, paddle boats, and sailboats ready to go. Wonderful coral reef snorkeling and scuba spots that are very close to the island.

Concierge set us up with some amazing excursions to the mainland. The resort tour guide took us on an exciting jungle river cruise, where we saw crocodiles, iguanas, and great blue herons. We saw the Mayan ruins and went zip lining and cave tubing. With all the exciting adventures, we still got relaxing time by the pool or in the hammock on the porch.

Spent the evenings sitting on the dock sipping champagne and watching barracuda and tarpons swim around. Such an amazing vacation, wish we had more than just one week because we couldn't fit in all the excursions the resort offered.

The mainland didn't have their rum tasting place open yet. But the resort bartender set up a rum tasting for us on the island and we had a bonfire on the beach that night with the other guests, so that made up for it! We will be back to this resort! Highly recommend!!!

Why you need an Unplugged Belize Vacation in the New Year

Sunrise-Beach---St.-Georges-Caye-Resort-Belize

What exactly is an unplugged vacation? Imagine time, minus television, computers, iPads, and phones... focused on people - where you literally unplug yourself from sensory overload! We challenge you to get away from the daily grind, to reconnect, to refresh.

Most of us are addicted to electronics, and a fast pace and don't even realize it. Ask yourself, when is the last time I went to bed without watching the news (especially around election time)? Or checking email or Facebook - one last time? So why not take an intentional break from the hum of daily life?

Here are Top 4 Reasons you need to consider it:

- Your brain needs to detox. There is a gland in your brain called the pineal gland. Its responsible for regulating melatonin, which helps you to relax and get to sleep. Your computer screen overstimulates the pineal gland. When it’s overstimulated the melatonin in your body is suppressed and your sleep and rest periods will be automatically more difficult. Give your brain a break.

- Memories are not made staring into screens! Memories are made laughing over meals or chasing hermit crabs on the shore. Memories are made exploring ancient Mayan Ruins or hiking through jungles. Memories are made in private cabanas and staring into one another's eyes. You will return home with unforgettable memories.

- Unplugged vacations encourage movement. Our bodies and our minds are happier when we move. When there is no television to watch you're more likely to take a leisurely walk go for a swim in the salty sea. You are more likely to be more active.

- Because at the end of the day - people matter most. Reconnect with your partner. Or your best friend. Or yourself! Cultivating healthy relationships is difficult when we are constantly distracted by text messages and emails. When is the last time you sat quietly and focused on yourself or your partner to the exclusion of everything else for days at a time? It will change your perspective and allow for more meaningful relationships.

A Peaceful Mind - Belize Island Oasis

Fun-in-the-Sun---Poolside---St.-Georges-Caye-Resort-Belize

It may be a while since you have planned a getaway. Sure, you have been dreaming about it this whole time, but to truly plan has been a bit of a hit-or-miss. With our guest returning and new guests arriving each day, we are thrilled to hear their reasons for traveling, and why they were so eager to come to Belize and St. George's Caye Resort. We wanted to share their thoughts and why they took the time to plan and prepare their safe and serene time on the island.

 1. To get a new perspective

There's nothing like travel to help you see that what you think is "the way people do things" is really just the way YOU do things. From our families to our work to our food to our homes, the globe is alive with differences you cannot imagine—until you see them for yourself.

2. To see the world through new eyes
"We need sometimes to escape into open solitudes, into aimlessness, into the moral holiday of running some pure hazard, in order to sharpen the edge of life, to taste hardship, and to be compelled to work desperately for a moment at no matter what," wrote philosopher George Santayana in "The Philosophy of Travel."

3. To gain an appreciation for what you have
There's no place like home—but that's so easy to forget. Leaving the comforts behind gives you a renewed appreciation for them when you return.

4. To get some distance from work
Americans have a reputation the world over have for being unable to leave their jobs behind. But taking a step away from the job is good for your physical and mental health. It's good for your work, too— it gives you the space to see the big picture in a new way, and builds a stronger team by forcing you to delegate and let someone else have your back.

 5. To settle grievances through shared experiences

There's nothing like a glass of wine by the cruise-ship pool to open a discussion that helps you see another person's side of things. Family follies and rumblings at the annual Thanksgiving dinner disappear when you're making memories and sharing pleasurable experiences—and seeing each other, literally, in a new light.

6. To get you out of your comfort zone
Whether you're stuck in a rut or looking to gain a little independence, traveling can teach you things you never knew about yourself. Discover your resourcefulness while mingling with the locals. Realize your capabilities while navigating your way through a foreign city. You'll never learn more about yourself than when you travel.

7. To admire Mother Nature
Travel gives us the gift of seeing how small we really are in comparison to the beauty of Mother Nature. From crystal blue waters to pink sands to lush greenery, the real world is full of colors and sounds, sights and sites, that no computer screen can duplicate.

8. To learn about other cultures
Every destination has its own unique history and style. A passionate local tour guide will immerse you in a world that's completely different from the one in which you live.

9. To strengthen relationships
There's something about the shared experience of travel that can bring people together. Family vacations, a trip with a significant other, or a girls' weekend will build a lifelong bond.

10. To unplug
We're constantly checking in on our phones, living life through other's status updates or posts. Traveling allows you to disconnect from emails and social media. Sit back, relax, and take in the moment without the screen of your phone blocking the view.

Welcome-Back-to-Belize---St.-Georges-Caye-Resort---Beach

If you follow our blog, you are not seeing double, we have written about this topic before. But it is even more important now to note how simple it is to arrive safely and peacefully at the island.

Just last week, the owner of the resort visited our Belize team, and here are the two - yep, that is it, two tips on ensuring your whole trip is as care-free as possible. It's really that simple!

1. You will want to come to the airport with your negative rapid test – This will put you in the fast lane to Belize!

2. Register with Belize's app before you depart for the airport – When you are registered you will want to save the QR code as an image to be able to use it quickly when needed through TSA.

It is that simple. And what is even better is that once you arrive in Belize, we escort you, safely distanced to our secluded island oasis. As a Gold Standard Certified Hotelier, you can rest assured as well that as soon as you are here, your safety and comfort are our number one priority.

What a way to return to traveling and give yourself the gift of freedom. Travel now, as we have some incredible last-minute deals, or book now and stay later, giving yourself something to look forward to!

We can't wait to see you in the sun!

We're Back! 10 Essential Things to Do Before Coming to Belize

beach-ocean-st-georges-caye-resort-belize

We couldn't be more elated to reopen on October 1st. We have missed our guests so dearly over the last six months and are thrilled with the news that we will reopen. St. George's Caye Resort is a naturally spacious place, with plenty of room to enjoy the seclusion of a private island paradise. With a maximum capacity of just around thirty-five people and acres of island to stretch, you will not find the more perfect environment to plan your next holiday.

Picture this: You've been dreaming about your Belize vacation for months and it's the day before your departure! The excitement and anticipation are at an all-time high, and you are probably taking the day to check off your pre-vacation to-do list. In the midst of dreaming of the beach, sunshine, and palm trees,

With adjustments to everyday living, travel has a few updates to the process as well. We have been preparing for your arrival with every measure in place. We are planners, and while we are excitedly awaiting for our first guests' return, we want to give you some valuable planning tips for your journey to the island!

Here are top items to check off your list before you head to the airport!

Ask our staff: With our expansive knowledge of travel, lodging, and excursion information, we are here to help. We want to make your trip to see us as peaceful and assured as possible so just ask!

Alert your bank and credit card company: Call the number on the back of your debit/credit cards and inform the bank of your travel plans. Provide them with the dates of travel as well as the location you're visiting.

Withdraw cash: It's a smart move to withdraw some cash for tipping or in case issues arise with your debit or credit cards.

Check on travel procedures for your trip to Belize: New airport guidelines and procedures are being implemented to maintain the health and safety of our visitors and citizens. If you have an upcoming flight into Belize, please check with your airline. We will post updates here as soon as official announcements are made. It is expected that United, Delta, Avianca, and American Airlines will have flights when the airport reopens.

Check luggage restrictions: Each airline has its own restrictions for carry-on luggage sizes and weight for checked luggage. Double-check to be sure your luggage falls in line with your airline's specific guidelines so your check-in experience is easy-breezy at the airport. If you are flying in from the U.S., be sure to check out the TSA website for a list of acceptable and prohibited items so you aren't held up at security.

Check-in online: If you're able, check-in for your flight online. Most airlines allow you to check-in 24 hours before your flight departs. Print your boarding passes or save them to your phone for easy access. This will save you time when you get to the airport.

Give itinerary to a family or a trusted friend: It is important for your emergency contact to have a copy of your travel plans, including the phone number for your resort and airline in case an emergency arises at home.

Contact your cell phone company: When traveling internationally, contact your cell phone company to check if your current plan supports international calls and texts. If your plan doesn't support international calls or texts, most companies can accommodate your short-term needs. St. George's provides access to complimentary wi-fi in the Sandbar Lounge if you don't want to use an international data plan during your trip.

Make copies of important documents: The U.S. Department of Consular Affairs recommends all travelers make two copies of all travel documents in case of emergency, this includes your passport. Leave one copy with a trusted friend or family member (along with your itinerary) and carry the other separately from your original documents. Check out their checklist for international travel for more details. Traveling from Canada or elsewhere? Check with your country's government website for specific recommendations.

Check the weather: This may seem like an obvious thing to do, but many people forget. Check the forecast for your destination and also the forecast for your hometown on the date of your return. This will help you pack appropriately for your trip and your return home. Wondering about the weather on the island? The Belize City forecast is not always reflective of the weather on the Caye, so be sure to read our take on the weather on our website.

Now that you have everything checked off your list, we can't wait to welcome you to the island life and pamper you during your time in paradise!

Reconnect and Celebrate at our Secluded Island Paradise

Retreat---Group---St.-Georges-Caye-Resort-Belize

While many of us have been staying close to home, we are beginning to reconnect with family and friends, ponder plans to celebrate special occasions we may have missed over the last few months, and think about traveling again.

Travel, celebrations, and time with the people we love look a lot different now versus 6 months ago. And while we may bit a little biased, we think our little slice of paradise is the perfect place to reconnect and celebrate special occasions such as weddings and family reunions, or just celebrate freedom again!

Many groups that travel to the island will "buy out" the resort giving them exclusive use of the grounds. Imagine being surrounded by palm trees, ocean views, and the people who mean the most to you. Explore the Caribbean Sea by snorkeling, kayaking, paddle boarding, and sailing together as you make memories that will last a lifetime!

During this unprecedented time, buying out our island resort for exclusive use has many benefits such as:

1. The guests at the resort are your family and friends, ensuring you are comfortable exploring and relaxing exclusively with familiar faces during your stay.

2. Weddings, family reunions, and other occasions can be celebrated in a safe and secluded (and beautiful!) environment.

3. While we are typically an adult-only resort, children of any age are welcome when you book the entire resort. Bring the entire family!

4. You'll have the ultimate private island experience- no roads, no cars or public transportation, and no crowds- allowing your group to truly reconnect while enjoying the privacy and beauty of the island!

Let us pamper you in paradise as you escape the stressors of day-to-day life and take time to reconnect and celebrate. Contact our friendly reservation staff at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. to discuss the details and ask any questions you have about travel to and from Belize at this time. We are currently booking for late 2020 and beyond.

We hope to see you in the sun soon!

Belize Celebrates - St. George's Caye Day & September Celebrations

Overlooking-SGCR

When is St. George's Caye Day? St. George's Caye Day is a public holiday in Belize, observed on September 10th. This is Belize's National Day and commemorates a victory in a key battle against the Spanish in 1798.

History of St. George's Caye Day - From the sixteenth century, the Spanish had been making attempts to control the region of the Yucatan coast which includes modern-day Belize. They never settled due to the lack of natural resources and the hostile Indian tribes. The first Europeans who put down roots were British sailors.

A Base for Buccaneering - Pirates would use the numerous cays (a low bank or reef of coral, rock, or sand) in the area as a places to lay in wait to attack passing Spanish ships. These pirates were known as 'filibusters', a word that is used in modern English for those who delay a political process.

Known as Baymen, these Europeans settled in the Belize City area in the 1650s after realizing they could make a living by cutting and exporting logwood back to Europe.

The importance of the timber industry to the country is shown on the flag of Belize, whose seal features a woodcutter's starter pack - three axes, a saw, and a mahogany tree.

In the mid-eighteenth century, the Spanish made several attempts to take control of the region. The conflict continued despite several treaties being signed by the Spanish and the British which were supposed to safeguard the rights of the Baymen.

On September 10th, 1798, the Spanish made an assault on the settlement with 32 ships and over 2,000 troops. They engaged with the Baymen at St. George's Caye and despite the overwhelming Spanish numbers, the Baymen won a decisive victory, that ended Spanish interest in the region.

In 1862, Britain formally declared the settlement a British Crown Colony, subordinate to Jamaica, and named it British Honduras.

How is St. George's Caye Day Celebrated?  Various Festivities take place to mark the holiday including an official ceremony on the eve of September 10th, with fire-works and cultural presentations. On September 10th, a colorful carnival parade with floats depicting the national symbols of Belize.

St. George's Caye Day is also followed 11 days later by another notable holiday, Independence Day, which marks Belize's independence from Britain in 1981.

Belize Unites to Celebrate Independence - On September 21, 2020, Belize will celebrate their 39th anniversary of independence. This day commemorates when the nation was granted independent status by Great Britain in 1981. Celebrations run from 'St Georges Caye Day' on September 10th right up until Independence Day, on September 21st. During this time, Belizeans and tourists alike partake in prideful flag-waving, display of colorful patriotic decorations, numerous vibrant parades, lively singing and dancing, carnivals, and indulgence in tasty feasts of local Belizean cuisine. There are also official flag-raising ceremonies and more solemn observances, along with educational events on Belize's history and culture. The celebrating continues for much of the month and is known collectively as "The September Celebrations."

Stay and Play Next Independence Day - September is a great time to venture to Belize. Tourism is still in the lower season so great group rate discounts and other specials are plentiful. Diving is desirable year-round and at this time of the year can be coupled with other cultural excursions or just a little R&R

A Brief History of Belize - European colonists first arrived in the area in the 1500s and clashed with the surviving remnants of the ancient Maya Empire. Early attempts by Spain to formally annex Belize were hampered by strong resistance from the Maya. English buccaneers later gained a foothold on the coast region, using the area to launch attacks on treasure-laden Spanish ships from Panama and Venezuela. By the early 1700s, English settlers known as "Baymen" established a presence in Belize, logging the valuable hardwood for export back to Europe. Today, the Belize flag features a stylized English "Bayman" logger in recognition of this part of the country's history. Although the Spanish initially tolerated the presence of English settlers in the area, things came to a head in 1786 when the British government appointed an administrator to oversee the region. After several years of clashes, the British gained full dominance over the region following a decisive naval battle off the coast of St. George's Caye on September 10, 1798, a date now celebrated as a national holiday in Belize. In 1862, Britain formally annexed the area, naming it British Honduras (after the Bay of Honduras, not the modern-day country of Honduras). In 1954, constitutional reforms were enacted and a constitution was written. In 1964, Britain awarded the colony self-rule, and George Price became the colony's first premier. In 1973, the colony was renamed Belize and the country was granted full independence in 1981.

Something to Look Forward To - Dive Into Belize

Welcoming-Committee---Dolphin-Fun---St.-Georges-Caye-Resort---Belize

Guessing we could agree... These days, we all need something to look forward to. So, even if you haven't been SCUBA diving or snorkeling, you have likely seen pictures and can attest to the fact that reef systems offer some of the most beautiful and tranquil sights in the world. Belize is known around the globe for its outstanding scuba diving and snorkeling. Sink into the clear, warm, waters of the Belize Barrier Reef to discover a magical underwater world full of colorful wildlife, coral, tunnels, and more!

St. George's Caye has been a dive destination for decades, offering some of the best scuba diving in Belize because we're just mere minutes from the barrier reef. With no other dive resorts in the area, the nearby dive sites are pristine, healthy, and almost always free of other divers. Our island's proximity to the reef means you can dive in the morning, return for lunch, and dive again in the afternoon – combining the benefits of a live-aboard dive trip with the comforts and service of a private island resort.

Hol Chan Marine Reserve / San Pedro

Hol Chan is a marine reserve abundant in wildlife located about an hour north of St. George's Caye, close to the island of Ambergris Caye. The name means "Little Channel" because there is a cut in the reef allowing marine creatures to travel between the inside of the reef and the open ocean.

Over 160 species of fish have been seen in the reserve, along with many types of coral, sponges, sea turtles, and marine mammals. Rays are common at the bottom of the channel, and lobsters, eels, and sea anemones live among the nooks and crannies. This is a great place to see the variety of what the Belize reef has to offer! St. George's offers weekly trips to San Pedro so guests can dive at Hol Chan Marine Reserve and other notable sites off Ambergris Caye.

Blue Hole / Lighthouse Reef

As the most sought after dive destination in Belize, the Great Blue Hole is a giant underwater cavern 43 miles off the coast. The hole is circular in shape, over 300 meters (984 feet) across and 108 meters (354 feet) deep, and was formed when sea levels were much lower thousands of years ago. As ocean levels began to rise, the cave was flooded. The Great Blue Hole is a part of the Lighthouse Reef and larger Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System, and was made famous by Jacques Cousteau, who declared it one of the top ten scuba diving sites in the world.

Today the Great Blue Hole is an UNESCO World Heritage Site and remains one of the top dive sites in the world. St. George's offers a full-day dive trip to the Blue Hole for experienced and advanced divers. To fully appreciate the wonders of this incredible site, we descend to a depth of more than 100 feet and therefore divers are required to have their Advanced Open Water certification.

Turneffe Atoll

Turneffe Atoll is a group of small islands off the coast of Belize. It is approximately 30 miles long and 10 miles wide, making it the largest coral atoll in the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System. The atoll was officially declared a marine reserve in 2012 because it is home to many important marine species. The land and seascape consists of a network of flats, creeks, and lagoons dotted by more than 150 mangrove islands. Large expanses of intact mangroves, seagrass habitats, and shallows provide important nursery functions for a wide array of fish species, crocodiles, lobster, conch, and other invertebrates. It is home to more than 500 species of fish, 65 species of stony corals, sea turtles, manatees, dolphins, seabirds, and other wildlife.

Turneffe is about a 30-minute boat ride from St. George's Caye and offers some of the best wall dives in Belize. Ask about upgrading one of your morning two-tanks to dive at Turneffe.

A Unique Diving Experience: Lionfish Dive Safari

Want to experience something new? Native to the Pacific Ocean, lionfish are progressively invading the Caribbean where they have no natural predators. Fortunately, these beautiful fish are extremely tasty and there is no limit to the number you can catch! Divers can help protect our local reef while enjoying delicious meals you're unlikely to find anywhere else. Our dive masters will teach you to safely spear-hunt this venomous fish. Become an "Invasive Lionfish Tracker," learning what is needed to control the lionfish population and practical ways to safely capture and euthanize these fish. Come enjoy an underwater dive safari today!

Plan for Peace – Your Escape to Paradise

b2ap3_large_paddleboard-belize-11-Peace-and-solitude---St.-Georges-Caye-Resort---Belize Plan for Peace - St. George's Caye Resort Belize

"There is nothing in the whole world which abides. All things are in a state of ebb and flow, and every shadow passes away. Even time itself, like a river, is constantly gliding away." - Ovid
It has certainly been a time of ebb and flow for the world; learning and listening. We have heard for some, this time has caused a slow down that has given time to reflect and even return to traditions lost in a previously "busy" life.We hope that this time has provided some of that solace, and we are impressed at how many people are putting a plan of peace for their future.
Our fall and early 2021 bookings are something we are so grateful for as we re-emerge. We have had questions on timeline, and are taking reservations from October 2020 on, at this time.
As you plan for your peaceful escape, we want to empower you with three ways to ensure that you return fulfilled, rested, and with that sense of tranquility that we hear so often, as a lasting effect of the island.

1. Plan for your island activities: Above all of the fun things to do while on the island, we find guests rave most about the opportunity to experience the sea. With our Hobbie Cat sailboats (with friendly instruction from our staff as your guide) you will be whisked away by sea breezes and venture over the bountiful Belize Barrier Reef. Take a pit stop for lunch on our sandbar and enjoy the 360▫ teal Caribbean views. You may also opt to take out a stand up paddleboard (SUP) or kayak through the mangroves and try to find our resident manatees. If you want to sink into a new world, enjoy complimentary snorkel gear provided to take you to where the reef teems with vibrant life. Find a green sea turtle or maybe even be lucky enough to swim with the dolphins. There is no limit to the beauty you will find in this place.

2. What do you want out of your getaway? Some guests wish to create exciting experiences during their stay. Others look forward to the complete solitude of the island; finding time to read, relax, and catch up on that extra sleep they were missing at home. The island offers a perfect balance of relaxation and adventure, so plan ahead to create the perfect vacation. (We love to plan with you so please be sure to ask lots of questions during your reservation process, so that we can help to create your custom stay.)

3. Make it your own!We have found recently that many of our guests are looking for ways to be together while staying safe. We are receiving inquiries for many weddings, girls and guy trips, family reunions, and birthday parties. Our island is naturally a perfect place to practice social distancing so families are excited to blend a trip to paradise, with their special occasion. With many venues in the US still closed, coming away to Belize offers the perfect opportunity to be secluded, on a pristine and clean island.

We think we could all agree, most people are ready for an escape. So we encourage you to plan for the future. Plan for paradise, and give yourself something to look forward to in the future.

Contact our friendly reservation staff to look into dates and with any questions about travel to and from Belize.

We look forward to seeing you in the sun!

Worth the Wait - St. George's Caye Resort

WebBanner-TGSHOTELS2020-01

As a developing country of only about 383,071 people, Belize has been very careful to plan their reopening process, systematically, skillfully and safely. At St. George's, we are doing the same. We were chosen as one of the exclusive hoteliers to be able to take international travelers, and we are working to become Gold Standard Certified.

Although the opening of the international airport is scheduled for Aug 15, we believe it may take more time for Belize to be ready for tourists. We pride ourselves in understanding our guest's experience from touchdown to take-off and with new processes and protocols, we want to understand how this all will impact our guest's experience. The owner of St. George's Caye Resort personally plans to travel to Belize as soon as US-based owners are given clearance to travel to the country, which they expect to be August 15.

So while we prepare for your arrival, we wanted to send you a sweet recipe to bring the taste of the island to you! Also, click here for incredible fare to pair your tropical beverage with!

We "cheers" to your next visit and wish you well in the meantime!

Dirty Banana

1/4 to 1/2 cup ice cubes

1 1/2 ounces (1 standard shot) white rum

3/4 ounce (1/2 shot) Kahlua (or other coffee-flavored liqueur)

3/4 ounce (1/2 shot) banana-flavored liqueur

1 ounce (2 tablespoons) light cream

1 ounce (2 tablespoons) whole milk

1 ripe banana

Garnish: unpeeled banana slice

Directions

Gather the ingredients.

Put 1/4 cup to 1/2 cup of ice in the blender container. Add the remaining ingredients except for the garnish, cover, and blend until smooth, increasing the speed as necessary to thoroughly pulverize the ice. Pour the drink into a small hurricane glass, martini glass, or other cocktail glass. Cut a slit halfway through a banana wheel and hang it on the rim of the glass.

Serve and enjoy!

Upon your next visit to St. George's Caye Resort, stop by the Sand Bar Lounge inside the main lodge for an afternoon snack and check out our selection of wines, beer, cocktails, sodas, and juices. You can relax in a cushioned chair or ocean-facing swing and enjoy books, games, good conversation, ocean views, and complimentary wi-fi.
