The first time I stayed at St. George's Caye Resort, coming from the Upper-Midwest, in the middle of winter, I was simply excited at the thought of escaping the cold, working remotely for a few days, and trading my "igloo" office setup for a much warmer "office with a view." At the time, I thought I was just booking a simple vacation. What I experienced was so much more and ended up leaving a lasting impression on me that has stayed with me now almost eight years later. It is why I went back, and why I know I will someday return again. (...and again)

From the moment I arrived, there was something different about the experience. The island immediately slowed me down in the best possible way. Instead of waking up to alarms, traffic, and endless notifications, my mornings began with coffee (delivered right to my room) overlooking the Caribbean Sea and the sound of water moving gently beneath my overwater cabana. As someone from the Tundra, I honestly could not believe the beauty of the sea life thriving right there in the shallow water around the dock. What I quickly named "the aquarium fish vibrant, diverse, plentiful, with their companion of the occasional small ray or puffer fish swimming through crystal-clear turquoise water like something out of Jacques Cousteau special.

What surprised me most, though, was not just the beauty of Belize — it was the people I met there. During that first stay, I shared the island with a couple from Brazil, a solo traveler completing the final thesis submission for her PhD, a group of women celebrating their best friend's 40th birthday, and a group of parents from Utah who had come to Belize simply to "escape" parenting responsibilities for a little while and reconnect with themselves. The resort's family-style meals created this incredibly natural environment for conversation and connection. Every dinner seemed to turn into hours of storytelling, laughter, perspective, and meaningful conversation with people whose lives looked completely different from my own.​

Looking back now, I realize those conversations changed me almost as much as the destination itself. Coming from a smaller community, life can sometimes become beautifully comfortable — but also small. Routine takes over. Days blur together. Perspectives narrow without you even realizing it. Sitting around those tables at dinner each evening expanded my view of the world in a way I did not expect. Hearing people talk about their lives, travels, careers, challenges, dreams, and reasons for being there reminded me how much more exists beyond our own routines and assumptions.

​ And somehow, the resort manages to hold space for all kinds of experiences at once. One moment you are deeply relaxed, reading quietly by the water, and the next you are heading into the Belize jungle for an adventure that feels both exciting and grounding. Walking through the jungle — even on wide, beautifully groomed paths — still gives you this incredible feeling of stepping into something wild and alive. The sounds, the towering trees, the stillness between the birds and wildlife… it wakes something up inside of you. Belize has this rare ability to feel adventurous and peaceful at the same time.​​​

Solo travel here never felt lonely. If anything, it felt freeing. There is a natural ease to the atmosphere at the resort that allows you to be completely independent while still feeling welcomed and connected. Some evenings I would quietly watch the sunset from the dock. Other nights I found myself talking with strangers who quickly stopped feeling like strangers at all. There is space here for solitude, reflection, adventure, connection, celebration, and rest — often all within the same day.

Looking back nearly eight years later, I still think about the simple things, my first SCUBA diving experience, solo kayak through the mangroves, seeking a dolphin or manatee, the alone time, and the time reconnecting with self, others and the feeling of peace that followed me home afterward. My trips to St. George's Caye Resort and Belize have both reminded me to slow down, pay attention, and reconnect not only with the world around you, but with yourself.  That is why I came back once already. And why I know I will again someday.
