# History is Rich at St. George's Caye - By Ian Pearce

We are so grateful for the outpouring of comments on our posts, responses to our newsletters, and the love we are getting from our valued guests. It feels like we have never been this connected to our "island family" and we are loving it! When Ian Pearce, long-time guest of St. George's Caye Resort reached out to tell us his TRUE Belizean fish story, we asked him to recount some of the rich history of his family and this special place. This, like so many other stories of the island experience, is an incredible story and one we hope to continue with Ian, Commodore, and Deena for years to come!

Back in 1881 my great-grandfather Sydney Cuthbert, who came to British Honduras from Edinburgh Scotland, purchased the site where St. George's Caye Resort now stands. He and his wife (my great-grandmother), Amy Jane Simpson, from Aberdeen Scotland, would spend many a bright summer day enjoying the beautiful weather and sunshine in their two-story house on stilts. Above the second story, Sydney built a tower that my great-grandmother would use to hang a lantern to help him navigate his steamboat back from Belize to the Caye at night. So much history and happenchance has happened for my family at St. George's Caye.
Fast forward, as a kid, my family would spend summers on the Caye, but we had to rent a house up on the north end towards Quacka Head. I started to Dive the reef near St. George's Caye in 1976.
In the mid-1980's a man named Fred Good bought the 5 and a half lots that my grandmother owned from her and filled in the cuts with a dredge and built St. George's Lodge. He owned and operated it for around 30 years. During that time, we enjoyed staying and playing in and around the Lodge. My father, who was a dentist in Houston, eventually bought and kept a boat, the BelTexIan, in Belize. We would frequently visit Fred on our Belize vacations and enjoy dining and diving with Fred and Jose at the Lodge.
Later after the Lodge changed hands, it became St. George's Caye Resort. We have had the great pleasure of meeting the new owner Tim and all the great staff (Barry, Janeene, Oliver, Jose, Freddie, Andy, Leo, Edison, Herber, Cornell, Wilbur and the rest of the gang). We have been welcomed by them and made to feel like family at the Caye. My dad (we all call him Commodore), my girlfriend Deena, my children (Clara & Leah) and I have been guests at the Resort on numerous occasions and love all the great activities and new friends we meet there.
